How-To: Glitter Lips

Makeup artist Peter Philips took the shimmery lip trend from NYFW and made it shine in Milan. For Fendi’s runway show, Philips covered the models’ lips in a salmon glitter for a sparkly, nude look. Here’s how you can rock this look at your next holiday party, pair with your Halloween costume, or flaunt any day of the week.

What you’ll need:

  • Exfoliant
  • Lip liner
  • Lipstick
  • Fine, makeup-grade glitter
  • Lip brush or cotton swab

Step 1: Prep your lips by exfoliating them with a sugar scrub or toothbrush. You can make your own scrub using brown sugar and honey or olive oil. This step helps give your lips an even coverage.

Step 2: Line your lips starting on the outer corners and work your way in. This step helps to keep your pout on point even if your sparkling overcoat smudges.

Step 3: Apply your lipstick of choice. I found Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor gripped the glitter better than regular lipstick because it’s a sticky liquid, not a stick application.

Step 4: Pat generous amounts of the glitter onto your lips with a cotton swab, makeup brush, or just your finger. I used Glamour Glitter, but if you want to use chunkier glitter, apply Ben Nye glitter glue in place of your lipstick.

The glitter lip look is super fabulous when done right. All of the different lipstick and glitter combinations I tried looked trendy, but if the colors are too outrageous it might look more like you’re wearing a costume. (Maybe not a bad thing this time of year!) Overall it’s a fun twist on a bold lip—just remember not to lick your lips!
