Spring is in the air! As the flowers begin to bloom and the sun begins to shine, it is time to ditch our winter skin routines. Here are some tips and tricks on how to treat oily skin.

A clean diet is the first step in controlling oily skin. As the season changes, so should our eating habits. Oil production is caused by high levels of hormones, such as testosterone, which is commonly found in dairy products such as milk, butter, and cheese. Switching to dairy-free products, like almond milk and vegan cheese, will help eliminate oil production. Foods that contain saturated fats and trans fats should be avoided at all times. Lean poultry, salmon, mackerel, unseasoned nuts, and avocados are inflammatory fats and, are good for weight loss and oily skin.

Consuming less alcohol is another way to control oily skin. Drinking alcohol causes dehydration, which causes the skin to produce excessive amounts of oil. You don’t have to give up alcohol completely. Just make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and your skin oil-free.

Wash your face daily with an oil-free cleanser. Clean and Clear, Clinique, and Neutrogena are popular brands when it comes to oil-free face wash.

Never skip the moisturizer. In order to keep skin hydrated without looking oily, use a facial spray/mist. Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Chamomile, and Lavender hydrates and moisturizes the skin without looking oily. Laura Mercier has their Flawless Skin Perfecting Water Moisture Mist that provides a surge of hydration.

Choose the right makeup products. Makeup is a powerful tool that can either transform us into a goddess or a shiny, glazed donut. Primer is the first and most important step when applying makeup. For oily skin, use a mattifying primer. Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector by Becca and the Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Foundation Primer by Smashbox are two of the best mattifying primers on the market. After the primer is the foundation. You should also choose a matte foundation that’s either a liquid formula or a powder. Several makeup brands sell foundations with a matte finish, such as Maybelline, NARS, Too Faced, and L’Oreal. No matter what level of coverage you want, a matte foundation will keep your skin from getting oily.

Blotting powder is a gift from God. Blotting powder eliminates the shine and restores your makeup. Blotting paper is also a great way to keep the grease away. Rihanna’s new makeup line, FENTY BEAUTY, has the Invisimatte Blotting Powder and Blotting Paper that are perfect for whenever you are on-the-go.

If you have oily skin, don’t worry. Follow these tips and your skin will look healthy, fresh, and oil-free in this season of Spring!
